artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence has evolved over the years and one such is science fiction, which has the power to let people’s minds imagine the unimaginable. These science fiction are showcased in the sci-fi movies which depicted robots functioning as humans, and humans controlling robots as whims and fancies.

Artificial Intelligence also called AI is now a popular term due to the sci-fi movies that were produced in the past. Today, it has come a long way and it is part and parcel of our lives, whether in voice-enabled devices, predictions, or email management.

The basis for these complex tasks is machine learning algorithms that make the machine intelligence come to life. However, this was not always the case. Let’s take a look at how Artificial Intelligence has evolved over the years.

A Concept Rooted in History

The first practical application of machine intelligence was introduced by Alan Turing in the 1950s. He was a British mathematician who conceptualized machines that can “think” and conducted the Turing Test used to determine a machine’s ability to think like a human being.

The seeds of AI were set and watered by Marvin Minsky, who designed an AI lab in the year 1959 in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His vast knowledge in technology allowed him to provide radical ideas to Stanley Kubrick, who made the iconic sci-fi fiction movie in 2001.

The movie was titled A Space Odyssey. HAL 9000 from the novel was the ultimate representation of AI of those times. The excitement of AI-led to the invention of the computer in the 1980s. Since then, exploratory research is conducted by corporations to bring the technology closer to the consumer by affordability and application.

Putting into consideration that AI goes as far back in time, one will wonder why it is still called an “emerging technology.” In a real sense, Al is everywhere and has kept influencing most of our decision-making.

Our smart-phone personal assistant uses machine intelligence to recommend the best traffic route for us. Netflix is also coming up with relevant matches and recommendations for you, advising you what to watch based on your preferences and likes.

Al is not just limited to personal use, but aids in the transformation of work ethics. Business workforce applications are being remodeled based on machine learning. Brands use adverts as the basis for continuous learning, where data inputs are received from various data channels.

AI of Today

There is certainly more to come from AI as this is just the beginning. The future of AI is envisioned like a robot-driven economy where every manufacturer explores prototypes of self-driven cars, changing the fundamentals of private and public commuting.

AI has huge potential in security detection as well as management, as they look out for anomalous patterns in data. The chatbot is an AI application that is progressively replacing human customer service agents, through the use of robot-enabled conversations, to create all-round customer engagement.

Another high-tech agenda that AI shows some promises are molecular genomic and space exploration in the health care space. A time is coming and it is not far when men and machines will work side by side and interact just like the way normal humans do.

AI of Tomorrow

Every new technology comes with challenges in its widespread adoption. We’ve discussed the bright side of AI, however, there is the flip side too, that requires proper management. A major flip is the increased risk of data dependence.

Also, some experts opined that AI will render so many humans jobless, thereby causing social unrest. Hence, AI proponents must find a balance of good and bad. By doing so, it makes the AI revolution a positive change genomic.
