The Necessity of Locking Your Home Screen Layout?

How much time did it take you to customize your home screen? How much planning and How much effort did it take to do it all? Do you want it to just go away or You just leave your phone with the kids and come back and find all settings randomized or get randomized just by accidental touches? If no, then why not simply lock it. Yes, you got it right. The new lock home screen feature helps you lock the screen setting and also keeps your icon settings intact. The Android Pie update for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ comes with the all-new Galaxy S9 home screen layout lock feature. 

Don’t worry, it just locks the layout. You obviously cannot add or delete app icons or widgets from your locked home screen, once the setting is enabled. But you can surely use the Galaxy S9 home screen edit mode to customize the home screen. Although its new home screen layout lock feature might sound trivial yet this one simple feature gives the model a plus one to its existing features. 

Also, Galaxy S9 provides us with a multitude of wonderful features which enable us to customize the home screen in many ways. It provides third-party themes, daily changeable wallpapers, removes Bixby Home from the home screen, adds app folders, widgets for photos on the Galaxy S9 home screen, adjusts the grid layout, manages home screen panels, and finally pins individual files to the home screen. In addition to this, it also provides the landscape mode of the Galaxy S9 home screen.

Steps on How to Lock Your Home Screen Layout in Galaxy S9?

Below are the steps on how to lock the home screen layout. The Home Screen layout locked feature enables us to keep the layout settings and home screen icons intact. However, this very feature is not enabled by default, so users have to manually enable it. But as a matter of fact, how will you do it?

Here are the steps to do it. 

  1. First thing first, open your Samsung Galaxy S9, settings, and tap Display
  2. Next, you need to tap the Home screen option in the Display Settings. This opens up the home screen settings page, you’ll here find the option to lock the Home screen layout.
  3. Tap the switch to enable it. This will automatically lock your home screen layout.

Note: if in case you feel like adding/ removing any of your icons or make any changes to the home screen layout you can’t do it with this feature enabled. For that, you need to first turn it off then make the changes accordingly and toggle it back to lock the home screen layout.  

Also, if you try to move, delete icons on the home screen, or simply modify anything on the home screen, with the home screen layout lock enabled then you’ll get an error message saying:  

Can’t move the item. Home screen layout locked.

So to avoid this, we can disable the Home Screen layout lock feature. 

Steps on how to unlock your home screen layout locked in Galaxy S9?


  1. Long press (3 seconds) an empty part of the home screen
  2. Tap Home Screen Settings
  3. Toggle Lock Home Screen Layout off/on
